Lhong 1919

📍 Bangkok, Bangkok

A restored 19th-century Chinese merchant warehouse and pier on the Chao Phraya, its courtyard shrine to the sea goddess Mazu surrounded by faded original murals — now a riverside heritage, art, and design space.

Built in 1919 (on a site trading even earlier), this U-shaped Chinese-style warehouse once handled goods arriving by junk on the Chao Phraya. Lovingly restored, it now centres on a courtyard shrine to Mazu, goddess of the sea, framed by the buildings’ original — and beautifully weathered — wall paintings.

Why It’s Interesting

It’s a rare, tangible trace of Bangkok’s Sino-Thai trading heritage, with the patina left honestly intact. Around the shrine you’ll find design boutiques, occasional exhibitions, riverside cafés, and photogenic courtyards — a calm, characterful stop that pairs history with a pleasant riverside hour.

Getting There

Lhong 1919 is on the Khlong San bank of the river; the easiest approach is the venue’s own shuttle boat from Si Phraya pier (ICONSIAM side connections also work). Dress modestly near the working shrine.

Old Chinese murals, river breeze, good design shops. Nice.

Cinnamon lit incense at the shrine. Surprisingly solemn.
