Wat Samphran (The Dragon Temple)

📍 Nakhon Pathom, Sam Phran

A startling 17-storey pink cylindrical tower with an enormous green dragon coiled around the outside — you can climb up through the dragon's hollow body to a shrine near the top.

Rising out of the flat orchards west of Bangkok, Wat Samphran looks like nothing else in Thailand: a tall rose-pink drum of a building with a vast green dragon spiralling all the way up its flank. It’s improbable, a little surreal, and almost entirely uncrowded.

Why It’s Interesting

The dragon isn’t just decoration — its body is partly hollow, and in places you can walk inside the coils as you ascend. The upper levels open to breezy views over the countryside, and the whole complex has the quiet, slightly mysterious air of a place few foreign visitors reach. Bring a sense of curiosity and a head for a few stairs.

Getting There

It’s about an hour by car west of central Bangkok, in Sam Phran district. Access to the tower’s upper levels can vary, so go with flexible expectations — even from the ground, the coiled dragon is a sight worth the drive. Dress respectfully.
