The Jim Thompson House
📍 Bangkok, Bangkok
The exquisite teak home of the American who revived Thai silk — six traditional houses joined into one, packed with Asian art — and whose own story ends in mystery: he vanished without trace in the Malaysian jungle in 1967.
Jim Thompson was an American architect and former intelligence officer who, after WWII, single-handedly revived Thailand’s flagging silk industry and became a Bangkok legend. His home — six antique teak houses reassembled into one, filled with Southeast Asian art — is now a museum and a green oasis beside a city canal.
Why It’s Interesting
The house is a masterclass in traditional Thai architecture and a gorgeous collection in its own right. But the hook is the mystery: in 1967 Thompson walked into the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia and was never seen again, spawning decades of theories. The guided tour brings both the beauty and the enigma to life.
Getting There
It’s tucked down Soi Kasem San 2, a two-minute walk from National Stadium BTS and the canal boat stop. Visits are by guided tour; arrive early to dodge the midday tour groups.
