Victory Monument Boat Noodles

Boat noodles (kuaytiaw ruea) were once sold from sampans on Bangkok’s canals; to keep from spilling as the boats rocked, they were ladled out in small portions. The tradition lives on in a cluster of stalls in an alley near the Victory Monument, where each bowl arrives barely bigger than a teacup.

Why It’s Interesting

The broth is the point: dark, intense, and traditionally enriched with a touch of pork or beef blood, layered with herbs and served over a nest of noodles with a slice of meat. Because each bowl is so small, the done thing is to keep ordering — and to stack your empty bowls into a teetering tower that the staff count up at the end. It’s cheap, delicious, and a genuinely different way to eat noodles.

Getting There

The alley runs off Ratchawithi Road beside a canal, a short walk from Victory Monument BTS. Grab a stool, keep the bowls coming, and see how high your stack gets.
